Basic Info and History

Based on a series of novels written by Hitoshi Yoshiyoka, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor tells the story of one Justy Ueki Tylor and his strange military exploits. The anime is loosely based on the novels with a few differences (Tylor is 40 in the books but his age was reduced to 20 in the anime). The Irresponsible Captain Tylor aired on Japanese television from about 1993-1994. A few years later, a direct to video series (Original Animated Video or OAV) was created. Made in 1997, the first installment was known as Tylor's War and kept very closely to the original show's style. However, Hitoshi Yoshiyoka died during the production of the OAVs and his daughter took over for him. The design of the characters changed slightly and the show took on a more serious light with less Tylor. The OAV was completed and the reign of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor ended...at least...in Japan.

In 1997, Right Stuf International bought the rights to the series and dubbed it to English, releasing it on video in both subtitled and dubbed formats. Fast foreward to the year 2001, and the new popularity of DVDs. That year, the Right Stuf released the entire series as a DVD boxset. The new set was not without its problems, however. The forth disc of the set was missing about five minutes of footage from an episode. The company soon fixed the problem and replaced an malfunctioning DVDs. A few months later, the Right Stuf released the OAVs for DVD.

Domestic Distribution

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor was dubbed by The Right Stuff International and they hold the American rights to it. Though you probably won't find the VHS tapes around anymore (maybe at some conventions and you can probably order them off the Right Stuf's official site) However, they also sell a DVD boxset, one for the series and one for the OAV. Though I have seen the OAV discs available seperately before, the TV boxset is always in a boxset. Meaning you have to buy the whole thing. On average, the TV boxset is about $120 for all 26 episodes (and if you know normal anime boxset prices, that really isn't that bad) and about $70-$80 for the OAVs. Not long ago, it used to be difficult to find anime. But today, you can find it sold at most stores, even Wal-Mart. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is carried in some of these stores.

  • Suncoast Videos
  • A common place to find anime and they are located in most malls. They carry a lot of titles, including Tylor. However, they are usually the most expensive. If anyone charges you more for anime than Suncoast, you're probably getting ripped off.

  • Local anime stores
  • Most anime/comic stores carry many anime titles. Usually, if there's a title they don't have, they can order it for you. However, these type of stores are not as easy to find as Suncoast, though some may have sales to make their anime cheaper.

  • Anime conventions
  • With so many stores gathered into one place, Tylor is there for sure. The bigger the convention, usually the better the selection (so don't come ranting if you don't find Tylor at FITcon or something). These are also good for finding other Tylor merchandise, such as the CDs and the artbook.

  • Best Buy
  • To my knowledge, Best Buy does not carry Tylor and I don't know if they ever will. However, I make mention of them because they are fairly common stores and have a good selection of anime at good prices.

  • Online stores
  • It's possible to use eBay to find Tylor, but suppose you want it brand new? My best suggestion would still be the official source, The Right Stuf. A friend of mine informed me that they often offer weekly sales on anime on their site and you can find their stuff at very good prices.
